The Department of History at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track appointment in sub-Saharan African history at the rank of assistant professor, effective August 16, 2019. The geographic and temporal focus is open. Thematic and methodological areas of interest may include, but are in no way limited to: oral tradition, memory, the senses, generation, aging, slavery, servitude, environment, technology, visuality, and digital history. A PhD in History is expected, though the department will consider applications from scholars excelling in innovative, interdisciplinary historical methods (e.g., an historical anthropologist). Candidates whose work complements the Department’s strengths in Global Early Modern, Latin America, or U.S. Southern History are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be expected to 1) maintain an active research agenda, 2) apply for external research funding, 3) teach four courses per academic year at the undergraduate and graduate level in African history and other areas of expertise or interest to the department, and 4) provide service to the department, the university, and the profession.
