The Department of History, The University of Western Ontario (Western) invites applications for a full-time probationary (tenure-track) faculty position in the area of Africa at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2022, or as negotiated. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience.

We seek applicants whose research explores the History of Africa (Time Period Open and Specialization Open). Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in a related field, or be very close to completion. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of a strong research record in any area of Africa, with a preference for research that complements the strengths of the Department. Historical training is required, and we prefer candidates whose scholarship uses African language sources. The successful candidate must demonstrate an outstanding record of research productivity in the form of high-impact peer reviewed journal articles, books, conference papers, awards, invited talks and other scholarly achievements as appropriate for their career path and stage.
The Department of History is a research-intensive department that also values excellent teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research strengths of the department include digital history, international history, public history, and North American history. As well as History modules, the department is home to or participates in several interdisciplinary undergraduate programs, including International Relations, American Studies (Major and Minor), and Public History (Minor). Our faculty supervise both doctoral and masters-level graduate programs (including MA in Public History), with an enrolment of approximately 70 graduate students.
