Description of Department/Program:
The Program in Jewish Studies is an academic, degree-granting program at the University of Colorado Boulder. Open to students of all backgrounds, Jewish and non-Jewish, PJS’s mission is to provide students with an outstanding, interdisciplinary, liberal arts education in Jewish history, literature, language, and culture. The Program fosters critical thought, engages students in professional development opportunities, and instills a keen appreciate of humankind’s interrelatedness and diversity. PJS also engages both the CU and external communities through extra-curricular programming, events, and projects aimed at furthering intellectual engagement in Jewish Studies topics. Further, the Program is deeply committed to the encouragement and development of faculty research and teaching.
Established in 1901, the History Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder has been and continues to be the home of nationally and internationally renowned historians. At the undergraduate and graduate levels our program has traditionally offered a broad education in most fields of historical inquiry. The Department’s faculty focuses on the following areas: the Twentieth Century World; the Early Modern World; Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s History; War; Imperialism; Nationalism and Decolonization; and Political History. The Department encompasses a variety of approaches, including social, cultural, transnational, and world history. Our aim is continuously to help define our field within the larger community of historians and to develop our students into informed, contributing, and effective citizens, scholars, and teachers, able to respond flexibly and with wisdom to changes in the profession and the world.
Overview of Job Duties:
Israel/Palestine Studies Endowed Professorship–Assistant or Associate Professor. The Program in Jewish Studies and the History Department at the University of Colorado Boulder seek a tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate professor in Israel/Palestine Studies with specialized training in history. The position will start August 2018, and the person hired will have completed all requirements for the PhD in history (or a related discipline such as Jewish Studies or Middle Eastern Studies) by then. Teaching experience is desirable. The successful candidate will have facility in Hebrew and Arabic, be expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching, conduct independent research, lead regular global seminars to Israel (and the West Bank, if possible), and contribute to the intellectual and institutional life of the Program in Jewish Studies. The successful candidate will be rostered in the History Department but teach three out of her or his four classes per year under the auspices of the Program in Jewish Studies. ABDs will be considered, but the Ph.D. degree in History/related disciplines must be conferred by August 20, 2018.
