Assistant Professor of African American/Public History at UNCW

The History Department of the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of African American History and Public History, beginning August 2022. The successful candidate will have a scholarly focus on pre-20th-century African American history, teach courses in both African American History and Public History, participate in the supervision of M.A. theses and capstone projects, and support UNCW’s interdisciplinary major in Africana Studies.

History Department faculty are expected to engage in scholarly activity towards publication or presentation, teach successfully at the undergraduate and graduate level, and participate in service to the department, college, university, and community. Research-active faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor at UNCW teach six courses per academic year (3-3).

To instantiate our values of access, equity, and diversity, the UNCW College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is embarking on our second year of a cluster hire initiative in the areas of Africana Studies, Race, Racial Inequality, and Social Justice. We seek to build a network of researchers, scholars, and artists that will support the ongoing work in which we are engaged and to set a path forward as we grow these areas of critical study into regional and national strengths. This position is part of this initiative.

UNCW is a comprehensive university enrolling over 18,000 students situated in the historic city of Wilmington, a port city between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Wilmington’s communities, resources, and institutions make it an engaging environment in which to teach African American history. The History Department’s public history program has a strong relationship with the many museums and historic sites in the region, which provide extensive opportunities for both students and faculty.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in African American History, Public History or a related field in hand at the time of appointment.
Strong commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service is required.

Experience teaching at the college level and ability to teach courses in the digital humanities are preferred.
